Description

The masonry parish church was raised between 1838 and 1846 in the Classicist style; the design was made in 1828 in the studio of the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and its original survives in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. The earlier Gothic church of 1414–1426 had one of the tallest towers in Greater Poland – in 1806 the tower collapsed and the ruined church was pulled down, leaving only the chapel with the revered image of Our Lady. On the night of 25–26 January 1945 retreating German troops set the church on fire; it was rebuilt in 1946–1949 on the surviving walls under the architect Roger Sławski. Since 2015 it has held the title of Diocesan Sanctuary of Our Lady of Buk.
