As early as 1257 Buk was granted to the custody of Poznań cathedral, and for almost 600 years the town belonged to the bishops of Poznań, who kept a residence here. Magdeburg town rights were confirmed in 1289 by Duke Przemysł II. The regular medieval layout of the square and streets has survived to this day despite great fires – the whole town burned in 1502 and 1507, and on 8 June 1858 fire consumed almost the entire square together with the town hall. The town's standing rested on brewing, cloth-making and weaving, and on its fairs on the trade route running west from Poznań; in 1870 Buk gained a station on the Poznań–Berlin railway.
